What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition. It happens when the brain makes less dopamine, a chemical that helps movements work smoothly.

When dopamine levels drop, you may notice changes in your movement. Common symptoms include:

  • Tremors (shaking)
  • Stiff or tight muscles
  • Slower movements
  • Problems with balance or posture

Parkinson’s can also cause symptoms that are not related to movement. These could include:

  • Sleep problems – difficulty falling or staying asleep, vivid dreams, or restless legs
  • Mood changes – feeling low, anxious, or stressed
  • Constipation or digestive changes
  • Urinary or bladder issues
  • Speech or swallowing difficulties

Not everyone will experience all these symptoms, and they can change over time. The team can help you understand how Parkinson’s affects you personally, and give guidance on managing your symptoms in daily life.

Local support groups can be a valuable part of looking after your emotional and social wellbeing. These groups offer a chance to:

  • Meet people with similar experiences
  • Share tips 
  • Access information and resources
  • Feel less isolated

Medication awareness

Parkinson’s medication helps manage movement symptoms by increasing or supporting dopamine in the brain.

Timing is very important. Taking doses late or forgetting to take your medication can make symptoms worse, so always try to take your tablets exactly when prescribed.

It is recommended to take medication either 30 minutes before, or 1 hour after food. Your neurology nurse can offer more support with this as needed.

Because everyone’s symptoms and responses are different, treatment is tailored to each person. If you notice new or worrying side effects, please contact the team.

When to contact us

  • New or worsening symptoms (movement or non-movement)
  • Side effects from medication – such as hallucinations
  • Falls or changes in balance
  • Questions about your treatment or medication
  • Problems with daily activities
  • Needing further advice or support

Even if you’re unsure whether something is important, it’s okay to contact the team. They can help you understand your symptoms and decide what support you might need.

PD Warrior is an intensive circuit programme designed to fight the symptoms of Parkinson’s and protect the brain. The programme is designed specifically for people who have been newly diagnosed and are in the early stages of Parkinson’s with more mild symptoms. By completing specific and tailored exercises, PD Warrior can help you live better with Parkinson’s, improve your confidence and achieve your goals.

We currently run a 10-week ‘PD Power’ group based on these principles, led by PD Warrior-trained staff. Groups are held in Gorleston and Lowestoft. Please ask your clinician if this is something you wish to be considered for.
