Appointments

We offer offer a range of options when it comes to appointments, including:
•    Face-to-face clinic appointments
•    Home visits
•    Phone appointments
•    Exercise groups

We’ve summarised some of the key points information about our appointment types, to help you get the most out of your session with us.

Face-to-face appointments

We have clinics at various locations across the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area (see our clinics). Waiting times can sometimes vary by location, so you may be able to get an earlier appointment if you’re able to travel to another site.

Home visits (including to a residential or nursing home) are available for patients who are housebound and cannot attend a clinic.

Sometimes  it might also be more suitable for your therapy to take place at home — for example, if you’re working towards specific goals such as cooking, dressing, or moving around your home. Seeing you in your own environment helps us understand how you’re managing day-to-day, so we can offer the best advice on equipment, home adaptations, and tailor your treatment to your individual needs. This will be decided with you on an individual basis.

Once you are under our care, we may decide that an appointment with you at home might allow us to see how you are managing day-to-day. This is something that will be decided with you and on a person-by-person basis.

Wear suitable clothing that you can comfortably move around in.

Your physiotherapist may ask you to remove some clothing for your assessment. If you’d prefer not to, please let them know and they’ll adapt the assessment accordingly.

Please wear your normal footwear and bring along any additional aids you may have, such as supports, splints, and your glasses.

Be prepared to answer some questions relating to your condition and current symptoms, including how these may be affecting you physically and emotionally.

During your nurse appointment, you’ll be asked about your medication — how you take it, and any side effects you’ve noticed. Bringing a recent prescription can be useful, but it’s not a problem if you don’t have one.

Consider what it is that you would like to achieve. Your therapist or nurse will ask you to set a goal for yourself, as this helps to make your treatment more targeted and effective. This could be something personal like being able to walk to the shops, return to hobbies or simply to get out of your chair more easily.

We believe in working together to get the best results from your treatment. You’ll be encouraged to take an active role by setting goals and sharing decisions about your care.

We aim to help you build the skills and confidence to manage your condition long term. The more you understand your condition, the more effective your treatment will be. Your clinician is always happy to answer questions, so please feel free to ask!

Telephone appointments

For some people, a telephone assessment is the most convenient way to access the service. Our clinicians can complete a detailed assessment over the phone and give you advice on your treatment and management.

If you have booked a telephone appointment, you will receive a call from a member of the team. This may appear as a withheld number or from 01493 809977 - our main switchboard number.

In most cases, it is not possible to give a specific time for your telephone appointment. However, if you require a call at a specific time – for example, to fit in with your work pattern - please make this clear when booking and we will try to accommodate this.

Please make every effort to answer your telephone on the day of the appointment.

Normally, we would not leave a voicemail message unless you have given your consent. If we do happen to miss you the first time, we will always try to contact you again.

A phone appointment will cover the same detailed series of questions as if you were being seen face-to-face. Be prepared to answer some questions relating to your condition and current symptoms, including how these may be affecting you physically and emotionally.

Your clinician will discuss the most appropriate course of action for your symptoms with you. This might include arranging a face-to-face appointment, sending you further information or exercises, or making onward referrals to other services, depending on your specific needs at the time.

Exercise groups

We offer a range of supervised group exercise sessions. This is an opportunity to come together in a small group (normally 6 people per session), to help you gain confidence with exercise and to progress under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

Exercise groups run once a week for a total of 6 sessions. We ask that you make every effort to attend all 6 sessions to gain the maximum benefit. The groups typically also involve a short education session each week.

Our groups are not condition-specific, but we try to organise them according to your current level of ability.

Your therapist or nurse can arrange for you to attend one of our groups, so let them know if this is something you would be interested in.
